Which areas of Prague should families avoid staying in?
Truthfully, there isn’t an area in Prague that will completely ruin your family trip if you choose to stay there. However, there are a couple of neighborhoods we wouldn’t recommend as your first choice. Overall, Prague is very safe, so your decision really comes down to noise and the type of crowd you’ll encounter.
Old Town and New Town may seem like obvious choices for where to stay in Prague, but they can actually be the worst options. First, they are quite expensive, and you may end up paying as much for a crappy hotel as you would for a nice hotel in quieter districts.
Second, Prague has a reputation as a nightlife destination for young adults (stag parties, etc.), which can become quite obnoxious late at night. Ironically, one of Prague’s biggest law enforcement issues is drunk tourists.
Žižkov also gets a bad rap, and we can’t quite put our finger on why, because during the daytime, it seems perfectly fine. However, we’ve heard stories about it getting rowdy in the dark hours, particularly when there’s a soccer match at the FK Viktoria Žižkov stadium.
How to get Prague city centre from the airport?
Using public transportation to reach the best areas to stay in Prague can be a bit inconvenient. Personally, we dislike having to transfer when traveling to or from the airport, which is often the case in Prague. Most of the time, you’ll need to take a bus in addition to a tram or metro.
Depending on your destination, you’ll usually board a bus directly at Prague Airport and then transfer at either Divoká Šárka or Nádraží Veleslavín. From there, you’ll switch to a tram or metro toward your accommodation.
❗️IMPORTANT TIP: Make sure you’re looking at Václav Havel Airport Prague when searching for directions. There are multiple local airports in Prague but Václav Havel Airport Prague is the international one.
Alternatively, you can hail a taxi or book an Uber or Bolt transfer. While these options aren’t cheap, and you’re likely to get stuck in traffic, we understand how easy it is to choose convenience over value when traveling with kids!
Is it better to stay in a hotel or Airbnb in Prague as a family?
Prague has long been experiencing issues with overtourism. While Airbnb was once the easiest way to have an authentic experience, this hasn’t been the case for nearly a decade. Instead, Airbnb has negatively impacted the local economy in several significant ways, including higher rents for locals and questionable tax practices.
